Pbd Systems: When Will They Ever Learn?

چکیده

We trace the tragicomic courtship between programming by demonstration and machine learning, two fields that seem made for each other but have never quite got together. A long-term historical perspective illuminates the twin roles of interaction and sequence learning in programming by demonstration, and reveals the parallel growth of machine learning as a research area in its own right. A view of the present shows a few—but only a few—intimations that these two fields are beginning to develop a meaningful relationship. The long-term prognosis is not so much wedded bliss as assimilation—ultimately PBD and ML shall, in the words of Genesis, cleave unto each other: and they shall be one flesh.

Why Programming-By-Demonstration Systems Fail: Lessons Learned for Usable AI

enable ordinary end users to create programs without needing to learn the arcane details of programming languages, but simply by demonstrating what their program should do. If PBD were successful, the vast population of nonprogrammer computer users would be able to take control of their computing experience and create programs to automate routine tasks, develop applications for their specific n...

Machine Learning in Programming by Demonstration: Lessons learned from CIMA

Programming-by-demonstration (PBD) systems learn tasks by watching the user perform them. CIMA1 is an interactive learning system for modeling the data selected and modified by a user as he or she undertakes a task. Part of a PBD system, CIMA is invoked when user actions are matched to find a common description of their “operands.” Although the system’s interfaces to users and applications are ...

Lifelong Machine Learning with Adaptive Multi-Agent Systems

Sensors and actuators are progressively invading our everyday life, as well as industrial processes. They form complex and pervasive systems usually called ”ambient systems” or ”cyber-physical systems”. These systems are supposed to efficiently perform various and dynamic tasks in an ever-changing environment. They need to be able to learn and to self-adapt throughout their life, because design...

Learning Robot Behaviour and Skills Based on Human Demonstration and Advice: The Machine Learning Paradigm

Service robots require easy programming methods allowing the unexperienced human user to easily integrate motion and perception skills or complex problem solving strategies. To achieve this goal, robots should learn from operators how and what to do considering hardand software constraints. Various approaches modelling the man-machine skill transfer have been proposed. Systems following the Pro...

Proliferative Breast Disease: Diagnosis and Implications

M. H. Skolnick et at. (1) obtained specimens by multiple fine-needle aspiration from the breasts of women with and without a family history of breast cancer. They assessed the prevalence of certain cytologic changes in these groups of women, which they labeled proliferative breast disease (PBD). Skolnick et al.'s use of this term is unfortunate because PBD is a well-recognized histologic diagno...
